Placebo Sciences

The Doctrine of Placebo Sciences

The formal model behind everything Vicky does — how the Pharmacist actually decides what to prescribe, and the real science its bones are quietly borrowed from.

The Physics — Free Energy & Stability

The model's core Stability function is the same shape as the Ising model from statistical mechanics — a real framework for interacting systems (and, in its social-physics applications, for modeling opinion dynamics and behavioral contagion in populations of people). A Hamiltonian sums a local field term for each unit and a coupling term for every interacting pair; the system settles toward whichever configuration has the lowest total energy.

Placebo Sciences borrows that shape directly. A person's internal system settles toward whichever configuration of traits carries the lowest total energy — read here as Stability. Two traits with a high coupling coefficient (κ) don't just add their damage independently; the way coupled spins in a real interacting system compound each other, they compound it. That's why Ego and Denial (κ = 0.4) are so much worse held together than either one alone — the interaction penalty term exists to charge for exactly that.

The Chemistry — Valence, Dose, Reactivity

Every element carries a charge — real chemistry's valence, repurposed: +1 for a stabilizer, −1 for a destabilizer, 0 for a neutral like Clout that amplifies visibility without adding truth either way. Each also carries a baseline weight, w0 — structurally the same role real pharmacology's EC50 plays in a dose-response curve: the threshold concentration at which an effect actually kicks in, not just the amount present.

Reactivity — R(x) = Σ v_i (x_i / w0_i) — is a normalized-dose index: each element's intensity divided by its own threshold, weighted by a reactivity coefficient, then summed. That's the same arithmetic real mixture-toxicology uses to combine several compounds into one hazard index: fractional threshold exposures don't just add up as raw amounts, they add up as how close each one is to its own tipping point.

The Philosophy — Stoicism & CBT

The destabilizer elements aren't invented from nothing. Most map directly onto cognitive distortions that clinical CBT already names and treats: Denial is motivated reasoning, Doom-Thoughts is catastrophizing, Projection is defensive externalization, Overthinking is rumination, Emotional Reasoning is treating a feeling as evidence of fact. The glossary didn't coin these patterns — it just gave each one a symbol and a threshold.

The stabilizers mirror the older tradition CBT itself grew out of. Honesty, Integrity, and Self-Awareness are Stoic prosoche — sustained, honest attention to one's own state — under different names. Grit is Angela Duckworth's actual research construct, unmodified. Nothing in the stabilizer column is satire; the satire is entirely in pretending you can dose them in milligrams.

The Neuroscience — Repetition & Pathway Formation

Every equation above describes a single snapshot -- one vector, one moment. Real neuroscience is what explains why repeating a dose would ever change anything. Donald Hebb's 1949 rule, still the foundation of how learning is understood today, comes down to one sentence: neurons that fire together, wire together. Repeated firing physically strengthens a synapse through long-term potentiation, and thickens the myelin sheath around the axon carrying it -- a literal, structural change that only happens with repetition, never with a single firing.

This is why every formula's Dosage & Administration line is written as a repeated schedule, not a one-time instruction -- and it's why Consistency (Cs) was already sitting in the glossary defined as “repeated aligned action consolidates habits and trust” before this section existed to explain why. It cuts both ways: a destabilizer that feels involuntary -- chronic Denial, reflexive Blame-Shift -- isn't one big flaw, it's a pathway that has simply been run more times than its opposite. Which is also the honest answer to why every formula's Refills line jokes that the condition never really goes away.

The Formal Model

Stability

S(x) = Σ qᵢxᵢ − λ Σ κᵢⱼxᵢxⱼ

Base charge-weighted sum, minus an interaction penalty for every high-coupling pair present at once.

Reactivity

R(x) = Σ vᵢ(xᵢ / w0ᵢ)

Normalized-dose index -- each element's intensity relative to its own threshold, summed.

Interaction Scale

λ = 0.0001

Global scale on every coupling term -- keeps the penalty proportionate at real mg magnitudes.

Minimal Correction

min |Δ| s.t. S(x+Δ) ≥ target

The antidote: the smallest stabilizer addition that clears the target Stability threshold.

26 interaction pairs are currently modeled across 45 elements -- only the pairs with a real, named coupling effect get a κ; most element pairs simply don't compound each other enough to matter.

The Periodic Table of Elements

45 elements, grouped by charge. Every formula in the catalog is written as a combination of these -- an active ingredient list is just an element vector with the mg filled in.

Vicky's Application

Every Pharmacist consultation runs this model for real. Each symptom you select contributes its mapped element, at that element's own threshold weight, to your destabilizer vector. Vicky computes your actual Stability Index and Reactivity Score from that vector -- not a canned response, your specific answers.

From there she determines the full antidote set your profile indicates, and scores the entire formula catalog by how well each formula's own active ingredients resolve to that set. The combination she prescribes is the one whose ingredients actually correct what your vector shows -- read your result card's Stability Index and Reactivity readout as her literal working, not a flourish.

PLACEBO ONE is a satirical, parody brand. The Doctrine of Placebo Sciences is a fictional model written for entertainment and artistic purposes. Its structural resemblance to real physics, chemistry, psychology, and neuroscience frameworks is intentional and disclosed above -- the resemblance is the joke, not a claim that this model is validated science.
